Zijn doorbraak kwam met de winst in het RTL-programma Sunday Night Fever, wat hem de hoofdrol in Saturday Night Fever opleverde. Daarna volgden producties als Grease en The Full Monty.
Na enkele jaren buiten het theater maakte hij een opvallende terugkeer in de musical Josephine B., waarmee hij een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn carrière opende. In West Side Story kruipt hij in de huid van Bernardo, een rol die zijn energie en veelzijdigheid opnieuw onderstreept.
