Ice skating in the cultural heart of Amsterdam
From 24 October 2026 through 16 January 2027, the ice rink will once again be in the heart of Museumplein. Lace up your skates for a lap on the ice, meet up with friends for a winter afternoon in the city or take a seat at ’t Wak for something warm, a drink or dinner.
With the Rijksmuseum as a backdrop and plenty to experience on and around the ice, one of Amsterdam’s best-known winter traditions returns to Museumplein.
A centuries-old tradition
Ice skating on Museumplein is anything but new. Between 1887 and 1937, a popular ice rink was already located here, and in 1893 the first official world speed skating championship was even held here, won by Jaap Eden.
More than a century later, ice skating returns to the same place. Right between the Rijksmuseum, the Concertgebouw and the Van Gogh Museum, we are bringing this Amsterdam winter tradition back to life.
Opening hours
Schaatsbaan Museumplein is open this year from Saturday 24 October 2026 through Saturday 16 January 2027. From Monday through Thursday, the rink is open from 12.00 to 21.00. On Friday & Saturday we open as early as 10.00 and stay open an hour longer for even more skating fun.
During the Christmas holidays, from 19 December 2026 through 3 January 2027, extended opening hours apply. During this period, Schaatsbaan Museumplein is open every day from 10.00.
