LYING-DOWN CONCERT CANTO OSTINATO
LYING-DOWN CONCERT IN THE LEBUINUS CHURCH
Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt is one of the most recognizable and influential works in contemporary piano music. Ten Holt worked on it in the late 1970s, composing it with keyboard instruments in mind. The piano was, for him, the instrument through which he could most directly shape his musical ideas. The piece consists of short, recurring patterns that can be played in different sequences and repetitions. This gives each performance a unique character—the music literally arises in the moment.
Performed by the world’s only four-piano quartet
This lying-down concert in Deventer is unique because of its ensemble: four pianists on four grand pianos. The Natalon Quartet is the only permanent four-piano quartet in existence and has been performing Ten Holt with full dedication for over twenty years. Pianist Robert Lambermont, who personally knew Ten Holt, is described by the composer himself as “one of the warmest advocates of my music.”
Precisely because of this direct connection to the source, the performance by this quartet feels exceptionally pure and true to the original intent.
Four pianos resonating in one space, four musicians trusting each other: the sound world that emerges is intense, layered, and almost physically tangible. A performance of Canto Ostinato is never the same twice.
